Hyperion Calculation Manager Performance Issue

Expanding Planning/Essbase node takes 3-5 minutes and then error "Server was unable to process request" is displayed

Verify that the Calc Manager service is not HUNG and/or Running.  The service can consume CPU/Memory, so ensure your Java Heap Size Min/Max is properly setup in your windows registry for Calc Manager

Smart View Performance with Hyperion Planning Applications

Below are some of the the tuning parameters to improve Smartview communication with Hyperion Planning, when using Webforms:
  1. Add the following Windows registry settings on the client machine where Smartview is deployed:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "ReceiveTimeout"=dword:001b7740
    "KeepAliveTimeout"=dword:001b7740
    "ServerInfoTimeout"=dword:001b7740
  2. Change Smartview Options to improve performance on large retrievals:
    • in Formatting: Select the option to Use Excel Formatting. Without this option, Smart View will reformat each cell based on the grid operations you perform. It will also mark cells as “dirty” each time you change data values. These activities add system overhead to all Refreshes, making them take longer.
    • in Advance -> Compatibility: Select the option Improve Metadata Storage
    • In Data Options: Select Suppress No Data/Missing, Zero
  3. In Excel -> Tools -> Save tab, disable the 'Save Auto-recover info every' which can have a negative impact on large queries that take time to render.

Hyperion PBCS August 2018 update for Planning and Budgeting

What's New in 18.08?

Summary:

Read the latest What's New Document for Planning & Budgeting

Content:

Another month, another What's New update!

A little quieter this month (especially on the Workforce front) but some good stuff, none-the-less:

The What's New document re-iterates the LCM Essbase and Relational Data partial export/import changes that were reverted in a patch for 18.07 after a Customer Connect post!  Yes,  you can still export and import just the data but be sure to keep the Relational Data (e.g. Supporting Detail, Cell Text, etc.) aligned with the Essbase Data.
New Application Setting to Restrict Currency Calculations in Forms to be Based on the Scenario Planning Range
New Infolets Designer Properties Panel to more easily make and see results of change
Folder support for Dashboards and Infolets; each uses the same folder structure as the Forms Folders now.  Thus, access permissions granted on a Folder will apply to all Forms, Dashboards, and Infolets in that Folder.  Note, if you are in the Dashboard, Forms, or Infolets UI, you will only see the respective Dashboards, Forms, or Infolets even though you may have all 3 types in the same folder.  As such, security permissions granted on the Folder from any of these views does, in fact, apply permissions to all artifacts in the FOLDER regardless of the UI from which it was assigned.  For example, if you put all "Blue" Dashboards, Infolets, and Forms in a Folder called "Blue Stuff" and you navigate to the Dashboard UI, assigning Permissions from this User Interface will apply to all Infolets and Forms in addition to the Dashboards in that Folder even though you only see the Dashboards from this UI.
New Server Setting for Financial Reporting Web Studio to Run Batch With Signed On User Credentials.  When this setting is set to "True," there is no prompt for a username and password in the Batch Scheduler but, instead, uses the credentials of the user who is currently signed in.
Finally after months of warnings, the Financial Reporting Studio Desktop Client is no longer provided with the 18.08 release.  Command line utilities associated with the FR Desktop Studio will also be discontinued with the 18.08 release.  Please use the Financial Reporting Web Studio instead of the Desktop Client.
Update Vision Sample Application.  This was announced last month but reverted due to technical issues and is being released in 18.08.
New documentation on Optimizing Business Rules.  This functionality has existing for a long, long time but Administrators and partners didn't seem aware of the way to leverage Activity Reports and the Calc Manager log messages after running a rule form Calc Manager, so we documented it.  The Activity Report shows the worst performing Calc Scripts and Business Rules.  Administrators are able to run these rules from Calc Manager to view the Log entries for analysis.
Upcoming Changes:

Classic Dimension Editor is going away in  the October 2018 (18.10) release.  Please do yourself a huge favor and start using the Simplified Dimension Editor to gain familiarity and to identify any gaps in functionality or enhancements by logging SRs before the Classic Dimension Editor goes away.
Composite Form creation is scheduled to be deprecated in 19.01  (January 2019) release.
Considerations:

As I mentioned in another post, remember that the 18.07 Release migrated all users to the new Financial Reporting Repository but did NOT migrate the user preferences.  Each user must manually set their preferences when using the Repository for the first time.
If you are a Smart View for Office with Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus be aware of a Microsoft Patch known issue for those who signed up for monthly channel updates between June 12 and June 14, 2018.  Microsoft patch 16.0.10228.20051 updated through the insider slow channel prevents the use of Smart View for Office with Microsoft Office 365.  Please avoid upgrading to this patch and use Microsoft Office 365 monthly channel Version 1806 (Build 10228.20080), which contains the fix for this issue.
Happy planning!

Hyperion Modules Optimizing Performance by Changing the Heap Size

Depending on your environment, you might need to change the heap size for your Java web application server.
For example, if you see “OutOfMemory” errors in WebLogic, increase the heap size.
If you need to reduce the memory requirement of the WebLogic Server, decrease the heap size.
By default, if you deploy Java web applications to a single managed server, EPM System Configurator sets the default heap size for the single managed server based on the machine's memory:
  • 12 GB or more on machine, sets heap size at 8 GB
  • 6 GB or more, up to but not including 12 GB, sets heap size at 4 GB
  • Under 6 GB on a 32-bit machine, sets heap size at 750 MB
  • Under 6 GB on a 64-bit machine, sets heap size at 1.536 MB

Hyperion 11.1.2.4 and Virtual Machine error - Insufficent memory for the Java Runtime Environment

Recently we had a snafu where 2 of my Hyperion services, APS and EPM Web, were not starting....i ran the validate.bat command from the Foundation server and came across this exciting log file.

hs_err_pid3444.log in the folder below (E is where my Hyperion is installed)
E:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epm-fnd\config\validation\11.1.2.0

Log file content was saying that Native memory allocation failed to allocate.

# There is insufficient memory for the Java Runtime Environment to continue.
# Native memory allocation (malloc) failed to allocate 1122576 bytes for Chunk::new
# Possible reasons:
#   The system is out of physical RAM or swap space
#   In 32 bit mode, the process size limit was hit
# Possible solutions:
#   Reduce memory load on the system
#   Increase physical memory or swap space
#   Check if swap backing store is full
#   Use 64 bit Java on a 64 bit OS
#   Decrease Java heap size (-Xmx/-Xms)
#   Decrease number of Java threads
#   Decrease Java thread stack sizes (-Xss)
#   Set larger code cache with -XX:ReservedCodeCacheSize=
# This output file may be truncated or incomplete.
#
#  Out of Memory Error (allocation.cpp:317), pid=3444, tid=7848
#
# JRE version: 6.0_35-b52
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (20.10-b01 mixed mode windows-amd64 compressed oops)

So i reduced the Java Heap Size for Min/Max for some of the services.  And restarted all the services and everything worked.

I thought i would share this nice tip that i discovered.

Hyperion Planning Simplified UI Login screen displays when Workspace times out

Some of my user's session timed out due to the inactivity and user's are seeing the Simplified Planning user interface login screen instead of the Workspace login screen.

This is happening because the session in Planning product getting invalidated even before the Workspace session gets timed out.

=================================================

To implement the solution, please execute the following steps (Please ensure you take a backup of the mod_wl_ohs.conf file)

1. Go into the OHS file

2. Navigate to \Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\httpConfig\ohs\config\OHS\ohs_component\
 Edit the following file:
\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\epmsystem1\httpConfig\ohs\config\OHS\ohs_component\mod_wl_ohs.conf

3. Add (or edit, if already present) the following parameters:

WLIOTimeoutSecs 1800
WLSocketTimeoutSecs 1800
to the sections for Planning and Workspace. Each section begins with an XML tag, for example:

Add the new "WLIOTimeoutSecs 1800" and "WLSocketTimeoutSecs 1800" properties as new lines within the tags, for example:

  SetHandler weblogic-handler
  WeblogicCluster planserver01:8300
  WLIOTimeoutSecs 1800
  WLSocketTimeoutSecs 1800

4. Restart the Oracle HTTP Server and the Workspace web application services after the modifications are complete.

5. Retest the issue Migrate the solution as appropriate to other environments.

PBCS and Creating / Updating Data Validation Rules

Creating and Updating Data Validation Rules

To implement business policies and practices, you can build data validation rules that are checked when conditions are met in forms. Validation messages can be generated if entered data violates validation rules. You can also build limits on submitted approval unit data using validation rules, and designate a reviewer, owner, or notifier to review data that meets some condition.

HFM Task Flow and Schedule task not running on time

We upgraded to 11.1.2.4 from 11.1.2.2 and noticed our Task Flow scheduling jobs would not run on the given date/time.  After opening Oracle SR and going thru a bunch of patches, this was discovered:

You need to patch your Planning to 11.1.2.4.007 (And some pre-requisite patches) since there is a component called the "Quartz Scheduler" used by Planning, HFM and Calc Manager.
Oracle Development has determined the issue is caused how Planning interacts with the scheduler. That is why the Patch is coming from the planning.

Issue now resolved.

Thanks,

Hyperion Patching 11.1.2.4 and Review Patches applied command

Many times we run into situation where we have applied a patch PSE or PSU and we forgot to note it down.   You can run this command on each server and review the patches applied with Patch Details, Date and Time:

Results will be stored in your Hyperion Folder under this path (I have my Oracle software installed under E drive)  E:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\cfgtoollogs\opatch

Filename will be opatchYYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM-SS(AMorPM)_1.log

Use Notepad++ for the best viewing option
  1. From a command line, change the directory to <EPM_ORACLE_HOME>/OPatch (example C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\OPatch)
  2. For Windows run: (make sure to confirm the proper JDK path - refer to the example below)
    opatch.bat lsinventory -oh <EPM_ORACLE_HOME> -jdk <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>/jdk160_29 > patchlist_servername.txt
